Dating back to the 1800s, troches have gained popularity in the last 15 years for fast and efficient absorption of medications, especially hormones. Synonymous with lozenges, troches are placed between cheek and gum, and gradually dissolves over 30 minutes. The mucus membranes in the mouth are thin and very vascular, so as the troches dissolve they are absorbed into the bloodstream, essentially bypassing the gut and liver.a
